The demonstration took place on Thursday 3 April 1986 outside the Sheraton Washington Hotel in Washington, DC. It coincided with the five-day annual meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, which had begun the previous day.
The Associated Press report says approximately 6,500 teachers attended the conference, but only about 15 joined the protest. A separate contemporary account in The Washington Post estimated about 20 protesters among roughly 6,000 conference delegates. Read The Washington Post’s contemporary report.
The protesters were objecting to an NCTM policy recommending that calculators be integrated into school mathematics at every grade level, including classwork, homework and assessment.
The Associated Press story had already appeared in other newspapers on Friday 4 April, including page 2 of the Ottumwa Courier in Iowa and page 15 of California’s Appeal-Democrat. The Sumter clipping is therefore a later publication of an Associated Press wire report, not the report’s first appearance.
