  • Mrs Skuse, Langley School, Norwich
  •
  • Excellent! The timing keeps the students focused and it brings out the competitive edge in them, especially the boys.
  • Year 9, Coln House School
  •
  • Some students wanted more time on some of the questions, but other questions had ample time. Students liked the variety of questions.
Good points for discussion and correcting misconceptions. Thank you.
  • Set 1 Year 4, Banks Lane Junior School
  •
  • We thought this was a challenging test for year 4 but everyone had a really good try and would have achieved even better scores if they had a slightly longer time.
  • 4KJ, Hong Kong
  •
  • We like this. We found it too fast and had to watch it twice!

  • Transum,

  • It is really worthwhile including maths concepts that aren't the current 'topic' in regular Maths lessons. The pressure to get to the main theme of the lesson is very strong an in most cases we don't get time to revise topics covered earlier in the year and basic numeracy skills don't get the regular practice needed. It is also worthwhile, at the end of this test, to pick out certain questions and ask the pupils to suggest the best way to figure out the answers, sharing good strategies and reinforcing maths facts.

How did you use this starter? Can you suggest how teachers could present or develop this resource? Do you have any comments? It is always useful to receive feedback and helps make this free resource even more useful for Maths teachers anywhere in the world.

Laptops In Lessons

Teacher, do your students have access to computers such as tablets, iPads or Laptops?  This page was really designed for projection on a whiteboard but if you really want the students to have access to it here is a concise URL for a version of this page without the comments:

However it would be better to assign one of the student interactive activities below.

Pupils could each be given a copy of the PowerPoint from this page and asked to edit it to produce a slightly different test for the rest of the class. They will need to edit the answer page too!
