After lunch was site development, which meant gadgets were to be built. The more gadgets you had, the more money you were awarded. Site inspection followed and then flagdown. As it was Sunday we all met in the marquee for Scouts' Own. Readings and prayers were read out. Following the Scouts' Own was supper, and then came the end of our first full day in camp as we went to bed.
Monday morning came and each patrol woke up slowly. Again, because of the weather, we were unable to do the activities on the programme, so the change was to go to Blaenau Ffestiniog slate caverns. After a breakfast of gipsy toast and jam, we went up for divisions. Cormorant raised the flag. After inspection the troop was split up and loaded into the two vans. At the junction of the lane and main road one van broke down. The others went ahead to the caverns while Bosun went back to pick them up.
At the caverns we started to look around in the shop and cafe. Finally the other half of the troop arrived and we queued up. The tour of the caverns was exciting and interesting, but it was my third time down there. When we came out, half of us piled into the van and drove back to camp. As the weather was alright we decided to go for a swim. The beach was rocky and we were surprised to find it all over us when we came out. No. 1 then asked me to go to town to order the meal of chickens.
After my hike around Criccieth town I got back to camp, where the rest of the troop had arrived. After our traditional Italian meal of spaghetti bolognaise and sponge pudding and custard, we all fell in for flagdown. Campfire followed. Four people were fired from the four main points of the compass and lit the fire. After the campfire story we went back to our tents, ate our baked potatoes and went to bed.
The leaders must have been in a very happy mood when they planned the programme because we were allowed a lie-in until 9:30. When we came to life we ate porridge and boiled eggs for breakfast. Starboard watch then went away for a blind trail. The trail only caught one person, Stephen Hateley, who tried to jump the bog but dropped in the middle and got slightly wet. Lunch was Backwoods lunch, including Spud Eggs, stuffed apples, twists, chocolate and bananas.
