America Camp - Camp Tamarack

23rd July - 7th August 1982

Scout leaders: No. 1, Alan Hill, Jack Squire, Stuart Linter, Norman Lester and Ron Kelly. Scouters: Linda Forrester, Irene Lester, Dot Kelly, Judith Preshorn. Ventures: Peter Nixon and Stephen Hopkins. Scouts included Chris Huyox, David Kingswood, Scott Lester, Peter Lester, James Robertson, Richard Tyler, David Bayliss, David Pope, Robert Cunningham, Stephen Brazier, Paul Plaskett and Gary Brockenridge.

We met at Wombourne Road Church at twelve o'clock on Friday 23rd July. We set off for Heathrow at about twelve o'clock. It took three hours to go down to Heathrow on the coach. At the airport we went through customs and had our passports checked. After that we walked down a tunnel which led onto the aeroplane. Our flight number was BA179. The flight took six hours, during which time we had two meals. Me and some other Scouts went onto the flight deck.

We arrived at New York at 8:35pm local time. John Trawler, George Moglich and Bill Mayger drove us over to Camp Tamarack. We reached there at 10:15pm. When we got there we met all the staff and some Scouts. We got our suitcases and slept in lean-tos, which were like sided huts.

Saturday

On Saturday morning a bugle call woke us up. For breakfast we had cereal, which we ate out of boxes. Next we ate scrambled egg. At 9:00 o'clock we drove to Manhattan Island. We parked in New York and walked round. We saw all the big buildings, the Empire State Building and the Twin Towers. We went to a television centre. Then we walked over to the river where New York's skyscrapers grew up. It was a great show. For lunch we went to Burger King.
