After Burger King, which is like a McDonald's or a Wimpy, we had cheeseburgers and a large portion of French fries. After we had finished we went back on the coach and had a boat cruise that took us all the way around Manhattan Island. We saw all the big buildings in New York. While we were on the boat we passed the Statue of Liberty Island. The whole boat tour was about two hours long.
When we got off the boat we went for our dinner. We all split up so that the Scouts had to go with a parent. I went up again and went to the Empire State Building. We went up the lift to the top. You could see for miles and all the lights were lit up on the bridges. When we got back on the coach, New York was just as busy at ten o'clock as it had been in the morning. When we got back to camp we went to bed. I was put to sleep in the same lean-to as Stephen Brazier and David Pope.
Sunday
Sunday was the day all the Scouts were due to arrive. We were woken by the bugle again. We had cereals and scrambled eggs. After breakfast we went on a hike with Bob Hern. He took us all over the camp. When we got back to camp we were told about the meal system. On each table was chosen a waiter and a cleaner-upper. The waiter had to come about quarter of an hour earlier than anyone else to lay the table. He also had to fetch the food. The waiter and cleaner-upper had to clean up. They did this for three meals and then swapped over.
Then we were told about the buddy system which was used when you had to have a swim. If you were a beginner you got just a red mark on your tag, but if you got the swimmers you would have a blue and red mark. When you went in the water you had to go in with a buddy. When they rang a bell, it meant to get out of the water and hold your buddy's hand up. When the bell rang again you got back in the water.
They told us about how camp activities worked. There were three periods before lunch, three after, and one after dinner. After we had had lunch we had a turkey dinner. After dinner we had the opening ceremony. We saw a film show and saw the ceremony of the Indians haymaking across the lake with a lit torch. Then we sang a song and went to bed.
