That afternoon we had a mystery tour to Blaenau Ffestiniog slate mines, with a guided tour in an underground tram. We returned to camp and cooked tea of corned beef hash and fruit cocktail. After tea the programme changed. Super Scout took place and various rounds slowly knocked out the better Scouts until only two younger Scouts were left, David Downs and Lee Downing. It was an eventful race to the shore and back, carrying a paddle and wearing a life jacket. David Downs from Gannet won. After flagdown, two from each patrol stayed at their site and the rest enjoyed the fair. Supper and tuck shop followed.
Friday 17th August
We got up at the same time and prepared for our last full day at Bala. Breakfast was grapefruit and sausage sandwiches. Flagbreak and inspection were followed by crazy sports including balloon toss, welly wanging, boat race, water transport and tug of war. Then came the mystery meal: the PLs chose four tins without labels. We ended up with peas, carrots, soup and custard. At 1:30 we had the regatta, with canoeing, sailing, rowing, swimming, sculling and team pulling. There was also a greasy watermelon game. At 7pm we entered the marquee for the banquet, with courses including Swiss roll, celery cheese, onion rings, chicken, toffee crisp, coke, bacon, sausage, marshmallows, Weetabix, chocolate biscuits and pilchards. Sketches and songs added to the banquet, and we went to bed full.
