# Time Arithmetic

## Practise adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing times with these self-marking exercises.

This is level 2: Subtraction. You will be awarded a trophy if you get at least 9 correct and you do this activity online.

For the first six questions type in your answers in hours and minutes using a colon to separate the hours and minutes for example 1:05 for one hour and five minutes.

 1 Take 5 minutes from 135 minutes. ☐ ☐ ✓ ✗ 2 Subtract 36 minutes from 2 hours and 13 minutes. ☐ ☐ ✓ ✗ 3 From 3 hours 5 minutes subtract 41 minutes. ☐ ☐ ✓ ✗ 4 Subtract 1 hour and 57 minutes from 3 hours and 32 minutes. ☐ ☐ ✓ ✗ 5 Take 3 hours and 0 minutes from 6 hours and 44 minutes. ☐ ☐ ✓ ✗ 6 Subtract four hours and twenty seven minutes from eight hours and thirteen minutes. ☐ ☐ ✓ ✗ For the next three questions type in your answers using a colon and am or pm or using the twenty-four hour format using four digits and a colon like this 17:25 for 5:25pm and 08:15 for 8:15am. 7 What time is fifteen minutes before 11:55am? ☐ ☐ ✓ ✗ 8 What time is forty minutes before 6:20pm? ☐ ☐ ✓ ✗ 9 What time is twenty eight minutes before 12:16pm? ☐ ☐ ✓ ✗ 10 How long is from 10:25am until 9:50pm? ☐ ☐ ✓ ✗ 11 How long is from 5:30am until 7:10pm? ☐ ☐ ✓ ✗ 12 How long is from 8:37pm until 9:14am the following day? ☐ ☐ ✓ ✗

Try your best to answer the questions above. Type your answers into the boxes provided leaving no spaces. As you work through the exercise regularly click the "check" button. If you have any wrong answers, do your best to do corrections but if there is anything you don't understand, please ask your teacher for help.

When you have got all of the questions correct you may want to print out this page and paste it into your exercise book. If you keep your work in an ePortfolio you could take a screen shot of your answers and paste that into your Maths file.

"I used this with my bottom set in year 9. To engage them I used their name and favorite football team (or pop group) instead of the school name. For homework, I asked each student to find a definition for the key words they had been given (once they had fun trying to guess the answer) and they presented their findings to the rest of the class the following day. They felt really special because the key words came from their own personal information."
