# Starter of the Day activities for February

This page provides an alphabetical list of the Maths lesson starters for this month. Altogether there are 366 different Starters of The Day. They are activities designed for pupils to work on at the beginning of their mathematics Lesson. The format lends itself to be projected from a data projector and used on an interactive whiteboard.

Add 'em
Add up a sequence of consecutive numbers. Can you find a quick way to do it?

Add Quickulations
Calculations appear on the screen every few seconds. This mental arithmetic starter provides pace to the start of the Maths lesson.

Book Worm
Work out the distance the book worm needs to eat through to get to the back cover of the last book.

Coins in Envelopes
Fifteen pennies are placed in four envelopes and the envelopes are sealed. It is possible to pay someone any amount from 1p to 15p by giving them one or more envelopes. How were the pennies distributed between the envelopes?

Cross Perimeter
Calculate the distance around the given shape

Faulty Button
Find out which of the calculator keys is faulty from the given information. A mathematical puzzle requiring good problem solving strategies.

Guitar For Sale
A question about the profit made when buying and selling a guitar.

Hot Estimates
Estimate the number of chillies in the photograph.

Leap Year
A question about the birthdays of a child born on the 29th February.

Lucky Numbers
Arrange the numbers so that the totals of the three numbers along any line are the same.

Maggots
Do as many of the calculations as possible before the maggots infest!

Meta Products
Which numbers when multiplied by the number of letters in the word(s) of the number give square numbers?

Mix and Match
Work out which team played which from the information given.

Multi-Toil Panic
Copy and complete the multiplication grid. The higher levels include negative numbers.

Odd Percent Out
A number of simple percentage calculations are given. The answers are in pairs. Which is the odd one out?

One Torch Tunnel
Work out the least amount of time for four people to walk through a tunnel?

Overlapping Squares
If two squares overlap, what shapes can the overlapping region make?

Plane Numbers
Arrange numbers on the plane shaped grid to produce the given totals

Rail Weigh
Record the weights of the trains to work out the weight of a locomotive and a coach. A real situation which produces simultaneous equations.

Rounding 1dp
Round off the given numbers to 1 decimal place then add the answers together.

Sectors
Work out which sectors fit together to make complete circles. Knowledge of the sum of the angles at a point will help find more than one correct solution to this puzzle.

Square and Even
Arrange the numbers on the cards so that each of the three digit numbers formed horizontally are square numbers and each of the three digit numbers formed vertically are even.

St Ives
The traditional St Ives riddle.

Stencils
Which of the coloured stencils will fit over the numbered card to produce correct calculations?

Make four litres given a seven and a five litre jug.

Work out which boy sent a Valentine's Day Card to which girl.

Four quick Maths questions to warm up the brain.

Find the value of the missing term of the sequence. It is easier than you may think!

It is called Refreshing Revision because every time you refresh the page you get different revision questions. You can use it over and over again.

You can customise this starter so that it only includes the topics relevant to your class.

A Maths lesson starter should sometimes be related to the work the pupils are currently studying and sometimes a revision of things they learned a long time ago. Sometimes a starter can be a puzzle, riddle or activity totally unrelated to the theme of the main part of the lesson. Our Starters of the Day give you a ready made resource to use throughout the year saving you hours of preparation time.

#### Reaction Time

When the numbers appear hit the correct button depending on whether the numbers are even or odd So far this activity has been accessed 5649 times and 99 people have earned a Transum Trophy for completing it.

Though starters can be chosen to match a particular topic there is also a lot to be said for choosing whichever starter has been set for today. Doing an activity that is not typical of the normal Mathematics lesson routine or which is a little outside of the teacher's comfort zone may produce unexpectedly positive results. Why not take a risk once in a while?

#### Four Colour Theorem

This mathematical activity involves colouring in! That makes a change. Using the paint bucket tool can you flood fill the regions so that no two adjacent regions are the same colour?

A starter will give your lesson a focused beginning and give you time to attend to the other little tasks you have to do such as calling the register and preparing for the rest of the lesson.

Some starters may only take three or four minutes while others could be developed and provide a worthwhile theme for the whole lesson.

Make a point of giving great significance to the lesson starter. The pupils will then also take the starter seriously and apply themselves fully to working on it.

Take time to present the starter professionally. Hide the tool bar and status bar of your web browser so as not to clutter the screen. Use the browser's zoom facility so that the relevant area of the web page fills your whiteboard or screen. Dim the lights if necessary and helpful.
