This activity is an idea used for many years for helping pupils learn a multiplication table. The original version was a strip of card with the numbers one to ten on one side and the answers to the times table on the reverse.
    TableLegs
The finger points to the numbers in a deliberate order, starting with the lower numbers, and returning to the lower numbers frequently, so that pupils can work our answers using mental addition at first until they start to remember the answers. Slowly the finger starts to include the higher numbers when, and only when, the recall of the lower multiplication facts is instant. The person moving the finger can see the answers on the back of the card so can tell the pupil whether or not they are correct. They then choose the next number to point to accordingly.

Note to teacher: Doing this activity once with a class helps students develop strategies. It is only when they do this activity a second time that they will have the opportunity to practise those strategies. That is when the learning is consolidated. Change the 'times table' above to regenerate another version of this starter for practising mental methods.

Laptops In Lessons

Teacher, do your students have access to computers such as tablets, iPads or Laptops?  This page was really designed for projection on a whiteboard but if you really want the students to have access to it here is a concise URL for a version of this page without the comments:

Transum.org/go/?Start=May8

However it would be better to assign one of the student interactive activities below.

Laptops In Lessons

Here is the URL which will take them to a page about learning times tables.
