Hot Summer Test

It is very hot during the summer, so hot that your brain could stop working!

Show that your brain is working well right now by writing out the 27 times table.

How far can you get in five minutes?

1 x 27 = 27
2 x 27 = 54
. . .

  • Transum,
  • I guess summer is a distant memory for all of you in the southern hemisphere? In fact you are probably the only people viewing this starter as it is the middle of the summer holidays for many schools in the northern hemisphere. Whatever the temperature enjoy this quick lesson starter before the main part of your lesson and remember that when your school day ends (in New Zealand and Australia) the school day of those in the UK and America is yet to begin!
  • Miss Green, Class 4
  • This was an excellent maths starter my class enjoyed it a lot. It kept them working for a while.

Note to teacher: Doing this activity once with a class helps students develop strategies. It is only when they do this activity a second time that they will have the opportunity to practise those strategies. That is when the learning is consolidated. Laptops In Lessons

Teacher, do your students have access to computers such as tablets, iPads or Laptops?  This page was really designed for projection on a whiteboard but if you really want the students to have access to it here is a concise URL for a version of this page without the comments:

However it would be better to assign one of the student interactive activities below.
