Tuesday morning saw the first full-scale invasion of lake Windermere by Scouts from Wolverhampton in canoes, Mirrors, a Wayfarer a Drascome. The Petrol Leaders set off from camp at 2pm for their 24 hour expedition. They started by crossing the lake on the ferry then walking 8 miles to a prearranged campsite. The rest of us started the afternoon with the scavenger hunt:
Dead fly
Evergreen leaf
Number of badges on provi front door
Phone number of camp payphone
Coloured comb: not black or white
I one shilling piece
A pair of trousers with a YKK zip
I wooden door key
In 1980 diary
A Mars wrapper
The Scout motto written in Morse
Signature of another Troop’s scouter
HB pencil
Easter bonnet
A completed copy of the camp crossword
A Scout membership card
A square inch of knitting
A joke about a dentist
A photograph
A nail
A root
A limerick about camp
Each patrol then built an obstacle for an obstacle course and the rest of the afternoon was spent racing around getting very hot and dirty.
As the PLs were away the Scouters each went with a patrol for second Bushbury Stew. I can only say that Kingfisher’s stew was much better than Gannet’s
The wide game this evening was laser blast with Cox’n and myself being the baddies
Cormorant gave us a great campfire even though they had no PL to help them. That night as we lay in our sleeping bags we heard the unmistakable whining of the bagpipes-the Phantom Piper!
Wednesday morning saw the only drop of rain we were to have all camp and it was only a drop. Each patrol prepared and nature display which was to be judged by the Scouters and Munchkins. Stephen Hopkins gave us a very interesting talk about his display and won the competition for Redshank. The most ancient and noble game of measles was then introduced to the Troop which took us up to lunchtime and the return of the PLs.
Boating took up the whole of the afternoon and Adam Kelly tried his hardest to capsize his Scout leader who was not amused!
Wednesday’s dinner turned out to be very nice indeed: pork belly draft, peas, potatoes, tinned pears and apple sauce.
