Plea from scouts hit by £1,000 blaze
Disaster struck the 37th Wolverhampton Scout group when fire swept through their hut in Wimborne Road. More than £1,000 worth of camping and canoeing gear was lost in the blaze, forcing the group to cancel a planned camping trip.
Scout leader John Tranter and venture Scout chairman Paul Cripps dressed up in fireman gear to draw attention to their plight, and appealed for help in replacing the equipment which was destroyed.
They lost several tents, a variety of other camping gear, and fire canoes, together with paddles and lifejackets. John said they can probably repair the sailing dinghy hulls which were damaged.
