The District Campfire

11th September 1983

Saturday 11th September saw the annual district campfire, hosted by the 37th Wolverhampton Sea Scout Troop. Several Sea Scouts had appeared at the Scout Hut, including Ian Buck, Windy McIntosh, Steven Hateley, Peter Cheese, Robert Cunningham, Andy Quinton, Charles Farley, Kevin Farley and me. It was pouring with rain.

Four Sea Scouts were taken in the PLs' car and the rest stayed behind until No. 1 picked us up. We headed to Bushbury campsite, drove down a lane into a field, and reached the campfire. Around the grounds were activities including abseiling, archery and pioneering. After lunch and another look round, I had a go at archery and was not exactly world champion.

At 8:10pm the campfire was lit by a great spirit of the fire and four Indians wearing loin cloths. The candles they held were held over the fire and suddenly the fire was alight. There were songs around the huge glowing campfire and a Gum Boot Dance. Our sketch then ended and the campfire drew to a close at about 10:15pm. The leaders showed films of the campsite. We packed up and set off home. Signed Superman.
