Thursday morning started with breakfast and sandwich making ready for the expeditions. Breakfast was grapefruit, sausages, tomatoes and scrambled eggs. After flagbreak and inspection everyone got ready. Kingfisher did sailing and mining, Redshank did mining and sailing, Mallard and Seagull did the Tintern expedition, and Gannet did Symonds Yat.

Seagull and Mallard dashed to get a canoe and started downstream against the current, because the tide was pushing up the river. After about three quarters of an hour the tide turned and we went merrily along until Simon Terry decided to canoe under an overhanging tree and capsized. At last, with tired arms, we saw our first glimpse of Tintern Abbey. The place where we had to get out looked more like the setting for It's A Knockout. It was ankle deep in silky mud and the bank was about seven metres high.

After cleaning up we ate sandwiches, spent a couple of hours looking around the seven or eight shops, and then set off for Offa's Dyke to get back to the site. When we returned there was time for a quick swim before tea of mixed grill, stewed apples and custard. After washing up there was a nature trail, followed by flagdown, a wide game, supper of cheese and biscuits and soup, then tuck shop and bed.
