a suitable brick we found the approx depth to be 7'0". Working the lock gates proved to be rather a messy business as they had recently been heavily creosoted and we were rather glad to be out of the scummy water into the cleaner upper reach of the river. We used the same method to measure the rise in water level when the lock was full and found this to be 6'-6" thus making a total depth of 13'-6".
