the way of the tow rope one of us would go ahead while the other continued to haul the boat until he arrived at the obstacle. Then letting the boat carry on under its way it was a fairly easy matter to coil in the slack line and heave it over the obstruction to the one who had gone ahead. This gave us a rest from rowing and at the same time an opportunity to stretch our legs.
