Pioneering
1) By itself this square formation is not rigid and can easily be pushed out of shape.
2) The triangle is a rigid structure which cannot be distorted.
By adding diagonals to No 1 the square can be made into a series of triangles and thus obtain rigidity.
Although not all crossing at right angles - the square lashing should be used.
