#### Car Park Puzzle

Can you get your car out of the very crowded car park by moving other cars forwards or backwards? There are five levels of increasing difficulty and the interactive interface makes this a fun problem solving exercise.

There are answers to this exercise but they are available in this space to teachers, tutors and parents who have logged in to their Transum subscription on this computer.

## Extension Activity

Make up a ten-question mental arithmetic exercise for a friend. For each question you should secretly write down your prediction of which strategy they will use. You should include addition, subtraction, multiplication and division questions and your ten predictions should all be different.

## Division Strategies

### Knowing division facts to144 ÷ 12

Knowing that 56 ÷ 8 = 7
will help work out
5.6 ÷ 8
= 0.7

### Doubling and halving

Dividing by 8 by halving three times
136 ÷ 8
= 68 ÷ 4
= 34 ÷ 2 = 17

### Dividing by multiples of 10

84000 ÷ 700
= 84 ÷ 7 × 1000 ÷ 100
= 12 × 10
= 120

### Dividing by single-digit numbers

76 ÷ 4
7 ÷ 4 = 1remainder 3
36 ÷ 4 = 9
Ans= 19
