Question id: 829. This question is typical of the type of question in a GCSE Higher examination. The use of a calculator is allowed.
The map extract shown below is drawn to a scale of 1 : 50 000.
(a) The distance on the map between the trig points P, at Pike Knowe, and Q, at Quarter Hill, is 14.6 cm.
Calculate the actual distance, in kilometres, between the two trig points.
(b) Chris is searching for a geocache that is exactly 1 km from trig point P.
He uses a pair of compasses to draw a circle, centred at P, showing all the possible locations of the geocache.
Calculate the radius, in centimetres, that he should use on the map.
(c) The area of Larkstone Reservoir on the map is 5 cm2.
Calculate the actual area of the reservoir in square kilometres.
