Why am I learning this?

Mathematicians are not the people who find Maths easy; they are the people who enjoy how mystifying, puzzling and hard it is. Are you a mathematician?

Comment recorded on the 24 May 'Starter of the Day' page by Ruth Seward, Hagley Park Sports College:

"Find the starters wonderful; students enjoy them and often want to use the idea generated by the starter in other parts of the lesson. Keep up the good work"

Comment recorded on the 3 October 'Starter of the Day' page by S Mirza, Park High School, Colne:

"Very good starters, help pupils settle very well in maths classroom."

Each month a newsletter is published containing details of the new additions to the Transum website and a new puzzle of the month.

The newsletter is then duplicated as a podcast which is available on the major delivery networks. You can listen to the podcast while you are commuting, exercising or relaxing.

Transum breaking news is available on Twitter @Transum and if that's not enough there is also a Transum Facebook page.

Go Maths

Learning and understanding Mathematics, at every level, requires learner engagement. Mathematics is not a spectator sport. Sometimes traditional teaching fails to actively involve students. One way to address the problem is through the use of interactive activities and this web site provides many of those. The Go Maths page is an alphabetical list of free activities designed for students in Secondary/High school.

Help

Counting up to 100 items can be challenging when they are randomly placed. To make this task easier, you can mark off the items as you count simply by clicking them. This helps with questions one to nine:

Example

Can you count the number of eights in this list? Click each one as you count it and check you have the same total as the one given below.

6 6 6 8 7 6 8 6 8 7 6 8 6 7 6 8 7 8 6 8 8 8 8 8 6 7 6 6 6 7 7 8 8 7 6 8 7 6 6 8 6 6 7 6 6 6 6 6 8 7 6 6 7 6 6 7 7 7 8 8 6 7 6 6 8 8 8 8 7 8 7 8 7 8 7 7 6 6 6 7 7 6 6 6 6 7 8 7 8 8 8 6 6 8 7 7 8 7 8 8 6 6 7 8 8 8 8 8 7 6 7 7 6 7 6 6 6 6 8 8 7 7 8 7 6 7 8 8 7 8 6 7 6 8 7 7 6 8 7 6 8 6 6 7 8 6 6 7 6 7 8 8 8 8 8 8 6 8 6 8 8 8 8 8 8 6 8 8 7 6 8 8 7 7 8 6 7 7 7 7 8 6 6 8 8 6 7 6 7 7 8 6 8 8 7 6 6 8 8 7 7 7 8 7 8 8 6 6 8 8 6 8 8 7 6 6 6 7 6 8 6 7 6 8 7 6 8 7 8 6 6 7 6 6 7 8 6 7 8 8 7 6 8 8 6 7 7 8 7 6 6 7 7 8 6 6 7 8 7 7 6 7 6 6 7 6 6 7 6 7

Total number of eights is 93

Alternative Method:

For website where a line does not appear through the item that you have counted (or for question 10):

For Windows Users:

  1. Open the Snipping Tool or Snip & Sketch (available in Windows 10 and later).
  2. Take a screenshot of the box with the items.
  3. Use the pen or highlighter tool to mark off the items as you count them.

For Mac Users:

  1. Use the built-in screenshot tool by pressing Shift + Command + 4.
  2. Drag to select the area of the box with the items and release to take the screenshot.
  3. Open the screenshot and use the built-in Markup tools to draw over the items as you count them.

For iPad Users:

  1. Press the Top button and the Volume Up button simultaneously to take a screenshot.
  2. Tap on the thumbnail that appears in the lower-left corner to open the screenshot immediately.
  3. Use the Markup tools that appear at the bottom of the screen to draw over the items as you count them.

This method helps you keep track of what you've already counted, making it easier to ensure you count every item accurately.

Don't wait until you have finished the exercise before you click on the 'Check' button. Click it often as you work through the questions to see if you are answering them correctly. You can double-click the 'Check' button to make it float at the bottom of your screen.

Answers to this exercise are available lower down this page when you are logged in to your Transum account. If you don’t yet have a Transum subscription one can be very quickly set up if you are a teacher, tutor or parent.
