A Mathematics Lesson Starter Of The Day

  • Fr D Byrne, St Columb's
  •
  • This is a great starter - I used it with a year 9 class prior to a lesson on trial and improvement and it really got their brains in gear.
  • SH, Brighton
  •
  • Am I being completely thick here? I can see how you can work out the 8 teams, but where is the criteria that tells you how to ascertain who played who?
  • Mr L, Weeting
  •
  • Start with the simple fact that if every game is taking place Tuesday night, anyone that is listed as a possible winner in one persons list CANNOT be playing each other, since they wouldn't both be able to win.
  • Triton Fun Math,
  •
  • I think we are missing some information.
  • Harry Beaux, Sheffield
  •
  • With the clues given I got Derby v Bradford and Wolves v Leeds. Not enough info for the other 4 teams.
  • King Edwards, Y12
  •
  • Leeds v Bradford, Millwall v Coventry, Wolves v Derby, Crewe v Stoke - we drew out a table and eliminated teams.
  • Mr. Edmonds, Year 9s
  •
  • There is definitely enough information to work out the teams, this is a really good 10 minute starter to engage minds, 10/10 would use again!
  • Stanley, Plymouth
  •
  • This is a great functional maths/problem solving starter. You can even change the team names.
    How to solve it:
    1. Establish the names of the 8 teams
    2. Draw a two way table with the 8 teams across and down
    3. Start working out who cannot play whom (if they are in a list of winners they cannot be playing each other)
    4. Once you have a “fixture” you know that team is not playing one of the other teams.
  • Year 5, Lady Royd PS (Bradford)
  •
  • A great starter- but Bradford FC will always score goals!!
    Ask Chelsea FC about this!!!!!
  • J Riley, West Yorks
  •
  • Great starter will definitely use in my next problem solving lesson.
  • Noah, Age 14, Hampshire
  •
  • Did it for revision, not too hard.

Laptops In Lessons

Teacher, do your students have access to computers such as tablets, iPads or Laptops?  This page was really designed for projection on a whiteboard but if you really want the students to have access to it here is a concise URL for a version of this page without the comments:

However it would be better to assign one of the student interactive activities below.

Here is the URL which will take them to another logic puzzle.
