# Intents Excitement!

The tent was only 190cm long. "That's nearly two _ _ _ _ _ _" said the salesman. Jenny was more concerned with the sloping sides. "I'm worried that the sixty five degree _ _ _ _ _ leaves little space to move inside. The _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ shape means you can only use the full _ _ _ _ _ _ when you are in the middle and even then I would _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ it's only about a metre. The _ _ _ _ or _ _ _ _ _ _ _ height of a person is around one and a half metres."
"But this tent is very popular" the salesman said. "I sold a _ _ _ _ _ of 25 of them last week. Many people said how they thought the shape of the cross section (an _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ triangle) meant the tent would be able to withstand high winds much better than a tent shaped like a _ _ _ _ with a _ _ _ _ _ _ cross section."

The initial letters of the missing words spell a wonderful thing!

We do, however, have one query - If it is known that one of the angles in a triangle is 60 degrees, then it must follow that the triangle must be equilateral and not, as it is later stated, isosceles.

• This starter is certainly something different. Have you ever used a missing-word story in your Mathematics lesson before? Are the pupils who enjoy and find this activity easy the same as those who are normally more talented with numbers or special concepts? 'Variety is the spice of life' and it could also be the 'cherry on the top' of your lesson! Have fun!

How did you use this starter? Can you suggest how teachers could present or develop this resource? Do you have any comments? It is always useful to receive feedback and helps make this free resource even more useful for Maths teachers anywhere in the world.

Teacher, do your students have access to computers such as tablets, iPads or Laptops?  This page was really designed for projection on a whiteboard but if you really want the students to have access to it here is a concise URL for a version of this page without the comments: Transum.org/go/?Start=July18 However it would be better to assign one of the student interactive activities below.

Here is the URL which will take them to an interactive version of this story.
