  • 8th Grade Class, Waverly Jr High
  •
  • You should not use and in writing numbers. And stands for the decimal point.
  • H Stockwell, Freebrough Specialist Engineering College
  •
  • As a GCSE examiner I can assure you "and" does not stand for decimal point, "point" stands for decimal point.
  • The Best Maths Class Ever 8cd/m2, King Alfreds Wantage
  •
  • We found this starter very very easy, but it was also very fun. Its a good start for the leason ahead, most of us got all four right.
  • Andrew, Vietnam
  •
  • Please never use 'and' for the decimal point. It's not true!!!!!
You say three point 6 seconds. (3.6s) not three 'and' 6 seconds. That doesn't even make sense!!!!!
  • AW, Worldly Knowledge
  •
  • Definitely say point for point, not and. Please.
  • Transum,
  •
  • There was a similar discussion about the word 'and' on the 7th October Starter. It does remind us that there are different ways of writing mathematics around the world.
  • Belinda, Canada
  •
  • When I teach, I use the word "and" to denote the decimal. But I would SAY the word as 3 and 6 tenths. I only do this when teaching students about decimals and place value. It's important that they know what it means. Then we can go to 3 point 6.

  • A chicken pie in Jamaica costs E2.00
A chicken pie in Trinadad costs E2.40
A chicken pie in St Kitts costs E2.15

Note to teacher: Doing this activity once with a class helps students develop strategies. It is only when they do this activity a second time that they will have the opportunity to practise those strategies. That is when the learning is consolidated. Laptops In Lessons

Teacher, do your students have access to computers such as tablets, iPads or Laptops?  This page was really designed for projection on a whiteboard but if you really want the students to have access to it here is a concise URL for a version of this page without the comments:

Transum.org/go/?Start=September19

However it would be better to assign one of the student interactive activities below.

Here is the URL which will take them to a related student activity.

Student Activity

If you would like to continue with the pirate theme but change from Number to Shape (transformations) try this Starter that challenges pupils to draw reflections of faces on a coordinate grid.

Reflective Pirate

"Shiver My Timbers, shiver My Soul
Yo Ho He Ho
There are men whos hearts as black as coal
And they sailed there ship across the ocean blue
A Blood thirsty captain and a cut throat crew.
Its a darker tale as was ever told
Of a lust for treasure and a love of gold...
Shiver My Timbers, Shiver my sides
Yo ho he ho"

If you chose the pirate theme for this Starter you will have heard
a short excerpt from the Muppet Treasure Island overture.
