Second Holiday

A Maths Starter of The Day

"Did you enjoy your holiday?" asked Mrs Scott. "Yes", replied Mrs Green,
"all 1,212,036 seconds of it."

A day trip to Blackpool Three days in London
A week in Pwllheli 10 days touring Scotland
Two weeks in Florida A month in Thailand

Which holiday do you think Mrs Green enjoyed?

A Mathematics Lesson Starter Of The Day

Topics: Starter | Arithmetic | Estimating | Time

  • Mr Gray, Bankhead Acad, Aberdeen
  •
  • Hmmm... I might avoid using this with my classes. It's a good excercise in estimating time and performing tricky calculations but how do you think the kids would react when I stand up and say "Phuket" in the middle of the classroom? [Transum: Phuket has now been changed to Thailand but for the record 'Phuket' is pronounced pu-ket.]
  • Kathryn, Leah and Anna, Balallan School
  •
  • We did the starter and did some very complicated sums. Then in the end we guessed randomly...WE GOT IT RIGHT!! Even though there was only three off us.
  • Claire, Newcastle
  •
  • 87324 / 60 (to convert to minutes) = 1455.4
    1455.5 / 60 to convert to hours = 24.25
    24.25 / 24 to convert to days = 1.
  • Lee, Teacher, Australia
  •
  • Ummm Phuket is not "Thailand" but a town in Thailand. Nothing wrong with saying it in the correct way!
  • Tiana L, Coorara Primary School
  •
  • Our class did this starter, and it was really fun and challenging. Eventually we got the answer that Mrs Hernandez had a day trip in Blackpool.

[Transum: Please note that the figures and names used in this Starter will be different to the figures seen by Tiana so the answer you are looking for may be different to Tiana's]

Note to teacher: Doing this activity once with a class helps students develop strategies. It is only when they do this activity a second time that they will have the opportunity to practise those strategies. That is when the learning is consolidated. Teacher, do your students have access to computers such as tablets, iPads or Laptops?  This page was really designed for projection on a whiteboard but if you really want the students to have access to it here is a concise URL for a version of this page without the comments:

However it would be better to assign one of the student interactive activities below.
