Meteorology Badge Test.
Questions included weather chart symbols, Beaufort scale wind description, fronts and isobars, ways in which clouds are formed, weather produced by a south westerly wind, instruments including thermometer, barometer, sunshine recorder, anemometer and rain gauge, and a mountain exposure exercise in Snowdonia.
David Onions' Meteorology Badge Test answers included: rainy and cloudy, temperature of 27 degrees C, sunny periods, and wind direction and force shown. The wind would raise dust and papers, and small branches could begin to sway. A front is the dividing line between a hot air mass and a cold air mass. An isobar is a line on a weather chart that shows pressure. Warm moist air meets a mass of cold air.
The thermometer measures temperature using mercury. The barometer also uses mercury but in a slightly different way. The sunshine recorder uses a crystal ball to concentrate light and burn a hole in the card, which records the hours of sunshine. The wind is caught in cups and turns the instrument, so the wind speed can be read off an appropriate scale. The rain is simply caught in a container and measured.
