The Visit To Wednesfield Police Station.
At 7:30 pm, a number of the Scouts met at the entrance of Wednesfield Police Station. At about 7:45 pm, a police constable, who was to be our guide on that night, introduced himself and immediately took us upstairs to a lecture room. He told us about things of a day to day Police constable and of his training firstly in the Police Cadets, but as time passed he got a little more serious and explained how the Police Force are always called in when petty things happen, like Mr and Mrs who argue, and small things like that which, until violence is added, can't be dealt with at all.
P.C. Mackenzie was our guide and he was wearing plain clothes. He took from his pocket a truncheon and a pair of handcuffs. He gave us a brief explanation of each, answered all of our questions, and then took us back downstairs and showed us into a big room.
This room had a desk at one end and wooden benches attached to the other 3 walls. It was used when the constable or detective had made an arrest. The accused would sit on one of the benches while the person at the desk would fill in a form, a sign for him to go into one of the cells which were just down the corridor. Just before we left he showed us the breathaliser and told us how it worked and when it was used. Then our guide took us to a cell. It was for young people who had been bad and can't go into one of the larger cells. It was more of a detention room where boys under 17 could stay for a maximum of 3 days. Inside was just a table, a very comfortable bed and a toilet.
