house. At first sight it looked like an old type of lock gate but because of the presence of a cast iron grating which appeared to pivot in the centre and which seemed strange for a lock we wondered if this could be the navigational aid which we sought.
Later on we were able, by making enquiries, to find that it was in fact an old punt slope whereby punts could negotiate the weir without having to pass through the lock itself.
