• Yes it's not the most cryptic, inventive or novel starter but it's a really quick one and an easy activity that has worked for me with classes of all ages and abilities. It panders to the pupils' competitive nature and because the answers appear below it is easy for the teacher to show them so that pupils can check their own working. A fun follow up is for the two pupils who got furthest with their list could have a 'Mental Show Down Final' in front of the whole class. They stand back to back and take it in turns to say the next double (with the rest of the class checking the answers). First to make a mistake comes in second place!
