  • This is a classic trial and improvement starter in which pupils can try guessed solutions and, if they don't give the required result, try a modified guess which will take them on the route of homing in on the correct answer. Being a little more sophisticated pupils might realise that the middle number will be close to the cube root of the given value. Some will be able to use their calculators to find a cube root while many other will not know how to do this. See the bottom of the old August 12th Starter page for a basic method for finding the cube root of a number.
