  • "Once you have some of the numbers in the grid it is really easy to put the others in place.
At first it's hard but start with the easy numbers."
  • Bob, Medway
  • Wednesday, September 23, 2009
  • "This doesn't work. 2 belongs in two places as does 6. 2 is prime, a factor of 168 and even. 6 is a multiple of 3, it's a factor of 168 and it's even. Unless you actually want to start a discussion about the validity of graphs, I really wouldn't use this."

  • "This has been my most successful starter yet! I can't understand why anyone would be negative about it. It really gets students to retrieve what they know about square nos and primes. Thank you!"

  • "Of course it works! Not only that, there is only one solution; let's not forget that logic is a vital part of maths too. This is one of my favourite starters and can lead to all sorts of valuble discussions."

  • "We'd like to see more of these."

  • "Bob look at the big picture, yes some can fit in more than one place but pupils have to realise that all have to be used once as it states in the instructions! so I disagree with your comment it 'does work!'."
  • Josh Hand, King's Worcester

  • "Dear Bob
My Class of Year 9s managed to complete this starter. It is possible. Take a logic class!

Teacher, do your students have access to computers?
Do they have Laptops in Lessons or iPads?

Whether your students each have a TabletPC, a Surface or a Mac, this activity lends itself to eLearning (Engaged Learning).

Here's the URL which will take
them to a similar but more complex activity they can try online. The activity has no solution (which pupils realise after about 10 minutes) but it is a good opportunity for them to "prove" that it is impossible.
