The traditional old Scouting game of shadowing was played as soon as darkness fell followed by Redshanks campfire. I'll never forget the levitation stunt, and the explanation of why sound will not cross a fire.
Thursday was expedition day. The APLs is started out on the 24 hour hike at 9:30am. The rest of the Troop were either going on a short hike around Loughrigg Fell or a long climb up Helvellyn. 13 Scouts started up Helvellyn but only seven made it. Andy Quinton wants everyone to know that he was first on the summit. David Onions had conquered his first mountain and Michael O'Neill rolled about in the snow.
It was while preparing for these expeditions that the camp warden inspected our site.
The evening’s meal was of the backwoods type with spud eggs, twists etc. Following this we had a lazy evening with a quiz. We invited a Troop from Yorkshire to join us for the evening's campfire. They were the first Barden, a young Troop with only nine Scouts. They gave us some of their district badges.
That night as we lay in our sleeping bags we heard the unmistakable whining of the bagpipes… the Phantom Piper!
For the final day in camp we spent the morning boating and the afternoon shopping in Bowness. The last evening meal in camp was to be the banquet which was to be prepared by the Scouters. So while we slaved away over a hot stove the Scouts made a cine film of camp life.
The setting was perfect, a U-shaped arrangement of tables and chairs with a fire in the middle and lots of lamps hanging in the trees at 8:30pm the banquet began with a total of 12 courses and entertainment between each course.
Speeches were made and certificates given out to all winning patrols and each Scout was knighted and given a new name and what's more there was no washing up!
