M for Mathematics

Write down as many mathematical words as possible
that begin with the letter "M".

  • When the students have had 5 minutes to think of their words, they could all stand up behind their chairs. Going around the class, each student calls out a word they have found beginning with the given letter. A student who doesn’t have a word which hasn’t already been called out sits down. The last student to remain standing is the winner.

Another way to make the most of this Starter is for the teacher to collect the words on the whiteboard as pupils suggest them. After a few minutes each word on the list becomes the focus of quick-fire questions about that concept. For example the questions for median could be: "What other type of average do you know?", "What is the median of the first five square numbers?", "Can you think of three numbers that have the same range and median?"
  • Mrs Reeves, Dover Grammar School For Girls
  •
  • Today we did this at the Dover Grammar school for girls and what we did was we wrote down all the words in a list, then each pair of children used rock paper scissors to decide who should start.
the children who won would go against the other child to see who has the most in a way like this,
    Wendy: multiply
    Jade: million
and so on. the one who has the most faces another child ands so a winner is found, the winner faces the teacher! HAHAGAGAGAHAHAH

Laptops In Lessons

Teacher, do your students have access to computers such as tablets, iPads or Laptops?  This page was really designed for projection on a whiteboard but if you really want the students to have access to it here is a concise URL for a version of this page without the comments:

However it would be better to assign one of the student interactive activities below.

Here is the URL which will take them to a self-marking activity with clues for the M-words.
