Constructions

Construct the diagrams from the given information then check your accuracy.

Level 1 Level 2 Description More Construction

This is level 1; Construct the diagrams using a ruler and pair of compasses. Give your answers in centimetres to one decimal place.

1. At the top of a page draw a horizontal straight line, AB, 10cm long.
Point C lies on this line exactly 5cm from the point A.
Draw the point D further down the page such that AD is 11cm
and BD is 10cm.
Measure the distance CD.

cm Correct Wrong

2. In the centre of a page draw a vertical line, AC, that is 12cm long.
DB is the perpendicular bisector of AC and AC is the perpendicular bisector of DB.
DB is 9cm long.
Measure the length of one side of rhombus ABCD.

cm Correct Wrong

3. Draw triangle ABC such that:
AB is 7.7cm, BC is 9.8cm and CA is 10.3cm.
Use compasses and ruler to bisect the angle BÂC and extend this bisector until it reaches line BC at point D.
Measure the distance CD.

cm Correct Wrong

4. Draw the perpendicular bisector of a 14cm horizontal line and use it to draw an isoceles triangle of height 13.6cm.
What is the length of either of the two sloping sides of the triangle.

cm Correct Wrong

5. XY is the diameter of a semicircle. XY is of length 13.1cm.
The point Z lies on the curved side of the semicircle such that XZ is 8.4cm.
What is the distance from Z to Y?

Mathematicians are not the people who find Maths easy; they are the people who enjoy how mystifying, puzzling and hard it is. Are you a mathematician?

Comment recorded on the 3 October 'Starter of the Day' page by Fiona Bray, Cams Hill School:

"This is an excellent website. We all often use the starters as the pupils come in the door and get settled as we take the register."

Comment recorded on the 19 October 'Starter of the Day' page by E Pollard, Huddersfield:

"I used this with my bottom set in year 9. To engage them I used their name and favorite football team (or pop group) instead of the school name. For homework, I asked each student to find a definition for the key words they had been given (once they had fun trying to guess the answer) and they presented their findings to the rest of the class the following day. They felt really special because the key words came from their own personal information."

Go Maths

Learning and understanding Mathematics, at every level, requires learner engagement. Mathematics is not a spectator sport. Sometimes traditional teaching fails to actively involve students. One way to address the problem is through the use of interactive activities and this web site provides many of those. The Go Maths page is an alphabetical list of free activities designed for students in Secondary/High school.
