A Mathematics Lesson Starter Of The Day

Topics: Starter | Calculator | Decimals

  • Cathryn Aldridge, Pells Primary
  •
  • I use Starter of the Day as a registration and warm-up activity for my Year 6 class. The range of questioning provided is excellent as are some of the images.
    I rate this site as a 5!
  • Sarah Bibi, Leytonstone
  •
  • I use this starter for my Year 5 class. It is quite hard at first but, once they get the hang of it, it becomes really easy and it really warms them up ready to start the day.
  • Mrs Mcfee, Bargeddie
  •
  • This looks difficult but most of my class finished it.
  • The Best Class Ever (7c/M1), Kingalfred's College Oxon
  •
  • My class now look forward every lesson to the next "challenge". They are really motivated to be the first to find solutions. This one was really good as all abilities were able to find a solution. Many found 750 and 20.8.

Note to teacher: Doing this activity once with a class helps students develop strategies. It is only when they do this activity a second time that they will have the opportunity to practise those strategies. That is when the learning is consolidated. Laptops In Lessons

Teacher, do your students have access to computers such as tablets, iPads or Laptops?  This page was really designed for projection on a whiteboard but if you really want the students to have access to it here is a concise URL for a version of this page without the comments:

Transum.org/go/?Start=December7

However it would be better to assign one of the student interactive activities below.

Here is the URL which will take them to a related student activity.
