A Mathematics Lesson Starter Of The Day

Topics: Starter | Arithmetic | Mixed

  • Juliet Flynn, Lincoln
  •
  • Excellent used with year 7. Stretched the more able. Thank you
  • Ole Jorgensen Year 6, Beckley Primary
  •
  • I loved this activity. I love this site so much I did this at home!
  • Al Green, Wiveliscombe, Somerset.
  •
  • Tried it as a starter for year 9, bottom set. When they struggled (and at the suggestion of the TA), we spent the whole lesson doing the first 10 questions in pairs on individual white boards and sharing pupils' methods and successes. Not my planned lesson, but they all worked really well for the whole hour (and then through another hour of decimals after lunch!).
  • Sue Sunn, London Academy
  •
  • Should the answer to Q2 be 42 miles instead of 21 miles?
  • Paul, Wales
  •
  • Excellent resource. Would love to find more like this.

[Transum: Here is another similar Starter.]
  • Easingwold,
  •
  • I don't understand how you are supposed to do these without a calculator. These were tricky. No one in year nine set 8 could do it.
  • Lucy Lesniak, Desborough College
  •
  • Loved this variety. I tried to change it, but didn't know how to it. It just returned to the default. Also, would be good to have the answers!

[Transum: The answers to the original questions are available to subscribers but I'm afraid the system can't work out the answers to the new questions you type in below. There is no save facility for new questions, sorry.]

Laptops In Lessons

Teacher, do your students have access to computers such as tablets, iPads or Laptops?  This page was really designed for projection on a whiteboard but if you really want the students to have access to it here is a concise URL for a version of this page without the comments:

Transum.org/go/?Start=September27

However it would be better to assign one of the student interactive activities below.

Pupils could each be given a copy of the PowerPoint from this page and asked to edit it to produce a slightly different test for the rest of the class. They will need to edit the answer page too!
